Around 9:00 am Saturday July 10, a mother and daughter drove up to an abortion facility in south Austin. The young African American woman stepped out of the minivan donning the abortion-appropriate attire of baggy sweats and a large t-shirt, while her mother waited in the car.

Judy didn't hesitate to begin reaching out to the young woman. She introduced herself and asked if she could talk to her. Immediately she told Judy she was there for an abortion. Judy then said to her:

"You don't have to go into a clinic where they won't tell you the truth, and where they may in fact hurt you. I have another solution: there are places (referring to pregnancy resource centers) where you will be treated with respect, where you can receive help today and at no cost."

The tears opened up like a dam that had broke. Instead of scurrying inside, she stayed a couple feet away from where Judy was standing, but turned her back on her, covered her ears and continued to cry.

"I dont' want to hear this," she told Judy.

So Judy paused for a minute, being very mindful of the emotional turmoil this young woman was suffering. A few more minutes passed with her back turned on Judy and silence before she started to walk away. Aware of the free will that each woman has to choose to abort their baby, Judy offered her brochures on local pregnancy centers and abortion facts saying,

"This information is for you so that if you decide to go into that place, at least you will be armed with truth."

She walked away without taking the brochures. Instead of going inside the abortion facility, she sat down on a curb at the edge of the parking lot. Judy continued to reach out to her, even though the young woman was not interested in responding.

All the while, the mother sat in the car with a despondent look on her face. After a few minutes of talking to the daughter, Judy said to the mother,

"Mom, help me here."

She wrote a note and held it up for Judy to see. "2nd baby, one at home 9 months old." Judy asked what her daughter's name was and she wrote "Sonia." For the next 45 minutes Judy continued to reach out to Sonia as she sat on the curb crying and clearly upset.

Judy called her by her name. She told Sonia that she knew she must feel overwhelmed at the thought of two babies at home, but that God loves her AND both of her babies equally. Judy emphasized that she didn't want Sonia to make a decision that she would regret for the rest of her life, and that she could take her to a place that very day that would help her financially, with medical care, with supplies for both of her children, maternity clothes…whatever she needed…for free.

An older woman drove up and came to sit with Sonia. Judy later found out this woman was a deacon from her church. The last thing Judy said to Sonia before she was silent so the two could talk was nothing short of pure love:

"Sonia, I will be here with you until you decided to leave this place.  If that is in 5 minutes I will be here.  If you are here for 5 hours I will be here with you.  It is not coincidence that you are here at this moment and that I am and that all the people you see behind me are.  God knows how troubled you are about this decision so He sent you an army to pray for you."

The two women talked for about ten minutes. Getting up, the deacon came to Judy:

"I know that your intentions are very good. Sonia is coming with me now. I am taking her away from this place."

She was glad to receive the brochures on the local pregnancy resource centers. As Sonia got into this woman's vehicle, she looked up at Judy for the first time. She still had tears on her face, but she smiled at Judy. She never went inside for the abortion. She didn't kill her preborn child. She chose life!!!

The mother who was still in her minivan was about to leave the parking lot as well. Before she did, she got out of her vehicle, and rushed at Judy to embrace her. Every single person out there praying saw how strongly she hugged Judy and saw her tears too.

"She was no longer listening to me. You have no idea how happy I am right now. I want you to know that your work here in not in vain. Thank you and God bless you."

"God is so powerful," Judy responded. "Thank you for letting me witness the miracle that God performed in your little girl today."

Our media are the streets…Abortion will end when the People of God say so. Now is the time for people of every religious and political background to join together to stop the killing. When we come out on the streets, we always win. Fewer babies die and more consciences are stirred to action, starting with our own.
